New Shepard rocket and space capsule

Blue Origin, the US aerospace company owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has launched its suborbital New Shepard rocket and space capsule.

The mission marked the company’s first test flight of the year and second flight of the New Shepard 2.0 spacecraft.

About New Shepard system:

The New Shepard system is a fully reusable vertical takeoff, vertical landing (VTVL) space vehicle. The system consists of a pressurized capsule atop a booster.

The name New Shepard makes reference to the first American astronaut in space, Alan Shepard, one of the original NASA Mercury Seven astronauts.

New Shepard 2.0 space capsule is designed to fly commercial payloads and up to 6 passengers on suborbital space flights for science and tourism.

The capsule features giant windows to give future passengers a stunning view of their launch into space.

Exercise Harimau Shakti 2018

Exercise Harimau Shakti 2018, between the Indian Army and the Malaysian Army commenced on 30 April at Wardieburn Camp, Kuala Lumpur.

Lt Col Irwan Ibrahim, Commanding officer of the 1st Royal Ranger Regiment of Malaysian Army welcomed the Indian contingent and wished the Indian and Malaysian troops for a successful and mutually beneficial joint exercise.

Sajid Javid is new Home Minister in United Kingdom

Sajid Javid, has been appointed as the Home Secretary in the United Kingdom.

He was appointed as Home Secretary on 30 April 2018 following the resignation of Amber Rudd.

About Sajid Javid:

Sajid Javid is a British Conservative Party politician and former managing director at Deutsche Bank.

He was appointed Home Secretary in April 2018, the first Asian and Muslim to hold one of the Great Offices of State.

He has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bromsgrove in Worcestershire since 2010.

Lake Victoria

Lake Victoria is one of the African Great Lakes. The lake was named after Queen Victoria by the explorer John Hanning Speke, the first Briton to document it.

With a surface area of approximately 68,800 square kilometres (26,600 sq mi), Lake Victoria is Africa’s largest lake by area, the world’s largest tropical lake, and the world’s second largest fresh water lake by surface area, after Lake Superior in North America.

Why it is in News?

Three quarters of freshwater species endemic to East Africa’s Lake Victoria basin face the threat of extinction.

World’s oldest spider discovered

A 43-year-old arachnid in Australia could be the world’s oldest recorded spider discovered by the Scientists.

The Giaus Villosus trapdoor matriarch, which recently died during a long-term population study, had outlived the previous world record holder, a 28-year old tarantula found in Mexico.

Dadasaheb Phalke’s 148th birthday

On 30 April 2018, Google honours the Indian producer for his 148th year of his birth.

About him:

Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, popularly known as Dadasaheb Phalke was an Indian producer-director-screenwriter, known as the Father of Indian cinema.

Starting with his debut film, Raja Harishchandra the first Marathi cinema which was also the first Indian cinema in 1913, now known as India’s first full-length feature.

Nadal won Barcelona open Title

Rafael Nadal won his 11th Barcelona title by defeated Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas.

It was world number one Nadal’s 55th career clay-court title.

The event has been held in Barcelona, Spain every year since 1953.

World’s first floating nuclear plant – Russia

Akademik Lomonosov, the world’s first “floating” nuclear power plant (FNPP) for installation in remote areas, has started its first sea voyage from this Baltic shipyard.

Akademik Lomonosov:

Akademik Lomonosov is a non-self-propelled powership to be operated as the first Russian floating nuclear power station. The ship was named after Academician Mikhail Lomonosov.

On April 28, 2018, it left St. Petersburg under tow for Murmansk, where it will receive nuclear fuel for the first time.

World Asthma Day is an annual event organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to improve asthma awareness and care around the world. World Asthma Day takes place on the first Tuesday of May.

The inaugural World Asthma Day was held in 1998.
