National Maritime Day

April 5 is celebrated as the National Maritime Day in India every year.

Why April 5?

It was on this day 99 years ago in 1919 when the country’s navigation history set sail with SS Loyalty, the first ship of the Scindia Steam Navigation Company Ltd started for the United Kingdom from Mumbai (then British Bombay).

In 2018, the theme of the occasion is ‘Indian Shipping – An Ocean of opportunity’.

Varuna award:

An award called Varuna is conferred to those who have made an outstanding contribution to the Indian maritime sector on this day.

Rocket Launches by ISRO

The number of rocket launches undertaken by ISRO during the last three years i.e. 2015, 2016 & 2017 are as follows:

                        2015:   5 launches (4 PSLV & 1 GSLV)

                        2016:   7launches (6 PSLV&1 GSLV)

                        2017:   5 launches (3 PSLV, 1 GSLV & 1 GSLV Mk-III)

During the last three years, starting from January 2015 till December 2017, a total of 169 foreign satellites from 23 countries were successfully launched on board Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).

Revenue earned through these launches was approx. 95 Million Euros and 4.5 Million USD in Foreign Exchange.

The total number of missions proposed during the ensuing three years i.e. 2018, 2019 & 2020 is 57 (26 Launch Vehicle missions and 31 satellite missions).

In 2018, 4 missions (1 Launch Vehicle mission and 3 satellite missions) have already been completed till date.
