Tamil Nadu

Inter-State Water Governance

  • Krishna Water Supply & Telugu Ganga Accord:
    • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay met Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in Vijayawada to request the release of additional Krishna water for Chennai’s drinking water needs.
    • Under the 1983 Inter-State Agreement, 15 tmc ft of Krishna water is allocated annually at the Tamil Nadu border for Chennai. However, reduced storage in Srisailam and Kandaleru reservoirs due to El Niño conditions created a shortfall (4.08 tmc ft delivered so far).
    • Andhra Pradesh agreed to consider a proportionate release from Kandaleru and Somasila reservoirs, while emphasizing the long-term strategic importance of the Godavari–Cauvery River Linkage Project.

National

Border Security & Geopolitics

  • Standardisation of Geographic Names in Ladakh:
    • India and China sparred over the Survey of India’s official standardisation of names for 28 geographical features in the Union Territory of Ladakh, including 11 peaks, 5 mountains, 6 land areas, 2 glaciers, 2 passes, 1 valley, 1 river, 1 lake, and 1 waterbody.
    • The features abut Patrolling Point 15 (PP-15), a prominent standoff site in Eastern Ladakh.
    • Rebuffing China’s objections, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) affirmed that the UT of Ladakh is an “integral and inalienable part of India”.
