• ‘Vettri Payanam’ Scheme (Expanded No-Fare Bus Travel):
  • Launched on Gandhi Jayanthi (October 2), 2026 at Koyambedu, Chennai.
  • Expands the earlier 5-year-old Magalir Vidiyal Payanam scheme.
  • Applies to 12,695 state transport buses across ordinary, express, limited stop service (LSS), deluxe buses in cities/towns, ordinary mofussil buses, and ordinary buses in ghat sections beyond 40 km.
  • Estimated to benefit 84.32 lakh beneficiaries daily.

• 13th-Century Chola Inscription Discovered in Medavakkam:
  • Found during pond restoration at Nalla Thanneer Kulam in Medavakkam, Chennai.
  • Dated back to 1268 CE during the reign of Telugu Chola king Vijaya Ganda Gopalan (who ruled from Kancheepuram).
  • Records the installation of a sluice by a merchant from Monappakkam (historic name of Medavakkam), highlighting historical water management systems around Chennai.

• Buxa Tiger Reserve Sighting:
  • Buxa Tiger Reserve in West Bengal recorded its first tiger presence after several years.

Sports (Asian Games 2026)

• Women’s Hockey Gold & LA 2028 Qualification:
  • Historic Win: Indian women’s hockey team defeated defending champion China 1-0 in the final (goal by Lalremsiami), ending a 44-year wait for the Asian Games Gold (first since 1982).
  • Olympic Berth: The win directly qualified the team for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
• Historic Recurve Archery Gold:
  • Indian Women’s Recurve Team (Kumkum Mohod, Ankita Bhakat, Kirti) won India’s first-ever recurve team Gold, defeating Korea 5-3 and ending Korea’s 7-edition winning streak since 1998.
• Boxing Gold Medal Sweep:
  • Lovlina Borgohain: Won Gold in women’s 75kg category (becoming only the 2nd Indian female boxer after Mary Kom to win Asiad Gold).
  • Parveen Hooda: Won Gold in women’s 65kg category.
  • Ankush Panghal: Won Gold in men’s 80kg category.
• Wrestling Gold:
  • Sujeet Kalkal won Gold in men’s freestyle 65kg category, defeating Olympic champion Kotaro Kiyooka in the semifinals.
• Sailing Podium Finishes:
  • Nethra Kumanan (Tamil Nadu) won the Bronze medal in the women’s dinghy (ILCA 6) event. (The TN Government announced a ₹30 lakh cash reward for her).
