Suo Motu High Court PIL on Removal of Caste Appellations:

  • The Madras High Court (First Division Bench) initiated a suo motu Public Interest Litigation (PIL) to enforce judicial directions and Government Orders (dating back to 1978) for the complete removal of caste appellations/suffixes from the names of streets, roads, and localities across Tamil Nadu.
  • The court highlighted the constitutional imperative of creating a casteless society, drawing parallels to earlier measures like renaming the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department to the Social Justice Department and removing caste names from educational institutions.
