National Events:

Indian Navy:

  • One nuclear powered submarine and two diesel-electric submarines will be added to the Indian Navy’s submarine fleet next year, and the Indian Navy has 4 Scorpene submarines.
  • The 5th submarine is INS Vaghir and the 6th Scorpene submarine is INS Wakseer. Named and merged in 2024.

 

Hyderabadi Haleem:

  • Telangana’s Hyderabadi Haleem has won the ‘Most Popular GI’ award after beating other food items including Rasgulla, Bikaneri Bhujiya, and Ratlami Sev.
  • In a rigid competition with more than 15 food items across the country with Geographical Indication (GI) status, the famous Hyderabadi Haleem has bagged the ‘Most Popular GI’ award.

 

Punjab Government:

  • The Punjab Government decided to restore the old pension scheme for its employees. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that the government has decided to implement the old pension scheme as a Diwali gift for its employees.
  • The decision was taken as an in-principle decision to the effect of the cabinet meeting. The decision aims to benefit lakhs of employees.

 

International Events:

International Stuttering Awareness Day:

  • International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD) or International Stammering Awareness Day is celebrated on October 22. The day creates awareness about the speech disorder known as stuttering or stammering.
  • Stuttering refers to disruptions in the fluency of speech. Its symptoms include involuntary repetition of words and temporary inability or difficulty to utter sounds or words, among others.

 

Tiger Triumph:

  • The Indian and US militaries carried out a three-day joint humanitarian assistance exercise in Vishakhapatnam in line with the growing strategic cooperation between the two countries.
  • The Tiger Triumph exercise was the second collaboration between the Indian and US Militaries to coordinate disaster relief in the region.

 

Canada:

  • Canada has banned the sale, purchase, and exchange of handguns to reduce rising violence, and the ban came into effect on October 21, 2022, announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

 

Government of Sri Lanka:

  • The Government of Sri Lanka has enacted the 22nd Amendment to its Constitution to limit the powers of the President.
  • Sri Lanka’s parliament passed an amendment to curb the president’s powers, strengthen anti-corruption measures and help the country recover from its worst economic crisis.

 

Giorgia Meloni:

  • Giorgia Meloni was sworn in as the first female Prime Minister of Italy. This is the extreme right-wing government that will be established in Italy after the Second World War.
  • Previously, Mario Draghi became the Prime Minister in 2021 with the support of the coalition parties in Italy. He resigned from his position due to the economic crisis in the country.

 

IIT, Chennai & NASA Jet Propulsion:

  • IIT, Chennai and America’s ‘NASA Jet Propulsion’ Laboratory have jointly studied the interactions between microorganisms in the International Space Station, in which Klebsiella pneumoniae microbe has been found.
  • The microbes found in the study pose no threat to astronauts, although the study was helpful in learning how microbes in space adapt to microgravity.

 

Mole Day:

  • Mole Day is celebrated annually on October 23 from 6:02 am to 6:02 pm. It commemorates Avogadro’s number (6.02 x 10²³), the basic unit of measurement in chemistry.
  • Mole Day was created as a way to promote interest in chemistry. Schools across the United States and around the world celebrate Mole Day with a variety of chemistry-related activities.
