National Events:

Hare Krishna Heritage Tower:

  • Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao laid the foundation for the Hare Krishna Heritage Tower in Hyderabad.
  • The 400 feet tall structure will be constructed on six acres of land in Narsingi at a cost of Rs 200 crore. The tower will house the temples of Sri Sri Radha Krishna and Sri Venkateswara Swamy.

 

Lithium reserves:

  • Lithium reserves have been discovered in Rajasthan’s Degana following the recent discovery in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi.
  • The newly discovered reserves in Degana are believed to be larger than those found in Jammu and Kashmir and officials claim that they could meet up to 80% of India’s demand for lithium.
  • This is the first time that lithium reserves have been found in Degana.

 

ISRO:

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced a new online training programme for post-graduate and final-year undergraduate students of physical sciences and technology.
  • The programme is called Space Science and Technology Awareness Training (START) and is part of ISRO’s efforts to enable Indian students to become professionals in space science and technology.

 

Common uniform:

  • The Indian Army has decided that brigadiers and above rank officers will have a common uniform from August 1, 2023 irrespective of their parent cadre and appointment.
  • The headgear, shoulder rank badges, gorget patches, belt and shoes of senior officers will be standardised as part of the decision.
  • There will be no change to the uniform worn by Colonels and below-rank officers.

 

YUVA PRATIBHA – Singing Talent Hunt:

  • MyGov in collaboration with Ministry of Culture is launching a YUVA PRATIBHA – Singing Talent Hunt on May 10, 2023. The initial submission for the competition will be open for a period of one and half month.
  • Top 3 Winners will be mentored for a period of 1 month with a mentorship stipend. 1st winner will get Rs 1,50,000, a trophy, and a certificate.

 

Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti: 9 May 2023

  • Rabindranath Jayanti is dedicated to a great Bengali poet, novelist, writer and philosopher Rabindranath Tagore. As per Hindu calendar, it was celebrated on May 7, 2023.
  • As per Bengali Calendar, it is being celebrated on 25th day of Boisakh which is on May 9, 2023. Year 2023 marks his 162nd birth anniversary. He even composed National Anthem of India and Bangladesh.

 

India Post:

  • India Post has signed a MoU with Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) and Tripta Technologies for logistics services. It will benefit small and medium traders as they will be able to use India Post as a logistics service provider.
  • It will provide shipping and the last mile delivery services to CAIT’s strong trader base and small and medium business in the unorganised sector.

 

Makoto Shinkai film festival:

  • PVR Pictures has announced a Makoto Shinkai film festival in India. Now, four of Shinkai’s previous hits along with Suzume will be screened in PVR and Inox cinemas across India from May 19 onwards.
  • The festival is being held in collaboration with Japanese Film Festival India, Japan Foundation, New Delhi.

 

Kuno National Park:

  • Five more cheetahs including three females and two males will be released from the acclimatization camps into free-roaming conditions in Kuno National Park (KNP) in Madhya Pradesh in June 2023.
  • Kuno National Park is a national park and Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh, India. It was established in 1981 as a wildlife sanctuary. In 2018, it was given the status of a national park.

 

Tamil Nadu Events:

Central Department of Archaeology:

  • Work is going on to set up a world-class museum in Adichanallur, Thoothukudi district under the auspices of the Central Department of Archaeology. As the first phase, excavation work was done in the Parambu area of Adichanallur.
  • After these works were completed, the work of documenting the materials found in the work was done. Then a 2 feet high iron anchor was found on the side of an old man’s bed.

 

International Events:

Annual Investment Meeting:

  • The Annual Investment Meeting, organized by the AIM Foundation, kicked off on May 8, 2023, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, UAE.
  • It is being held under the theme of “The Investment Paradigm Shift: Future Investment Opportunities to Foster Sustainable Economic Growth, Diversity, and Prosperity”. Guidance Tamil Nadu has been nominated for the Investment Promotion Award.

 

Five asteroids that will approach Earth:

  • Details have been released by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory about five asteroids that will approach Earth closely in May. Asteroid 2023 HG1 is currently travelling towards Earth at a speed of 7200 KMPH (2 KMPH) and is estimated to be the size of a house.
  • On May 9, 2023, it is expected to pass within 2,590,000 miles (4,160,000 km) of Earth, with a diameter of 60 feet (18 metres).

 

Imran Khan:

  • Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, was arrested by paramilitary Rangers on 9 May 2023. The arrest comes a day after the powerful army had accused Khan of levelling baseless allegations against a senior officer of the spy agency ISI.
  • He served as the 22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan from August 2018 until April 2022. He is also a former cricketer.

 

78th Victory Day parade anniversary:

  • Russia held the 78th Victory Day parade anniversary on May 9th, at Red Square in Moscow to celebrate the historic victory of the Soviet Union in 1945, when they defeated Nazi Germany in World War II, also known as the Great Patriotic War.
  • This year’s parade featured more than 10,000 individuals and 125 pieces of weaponry, which were all showcased by the Russian Defense Minister, Sergey Shoigu.

 

MakeMyTrip & Microsoft:

  • MakeMyTrip, leading travel portal announced a collaboration with Microsoft to bring travel planning to a wider audience through the introduction of voice-assisted booking in Indian languages.
  • The new technology stack incorporates Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service and Azure Cognitive Services to enable personalised travel recommendations for users based on their preferences.

 

Sports Events:

Miami Grand Prix 2023:

  • World champion Max Verstappen powered from ninth on the grid to beat Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez and win the Miami Grand Prix 2023. The victory extends Verstappen’s lead at the top of the standings and follows his triumph in the inaugural Miami race last year.
  • Aston Martin’s Spanish veteran Fernando Alonso took third for his fourth podium in five races this season as he continues to enjoy his late career revival.
  • Charles Leclerc, who crashed late in qualifying and started seventh on the grid, finished in seventh place with Frenchman Pierre Gasly of Alpine in eighth.
