Indian Navy test-fires Brahmos supersonic cruise missile

Indian Navy test-fired the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, from the Navy’s stealth destroyer INS Kochi. The supersonic missile successfully hit a decommissioned target ship in Arabian Sea.

Earlier the BrahMos missile has been successfully test fired twice from INS Kolkata, (one in June 2014 and February 2015) and one successful test firing has been from INS Kochi in November 2015. The recent test firing from INS Kochi has now re-validated ship’s precise strike capability.

Who was Udham Singh?

A BJP MP recently mentioned about Udham Singh in Parliament.

Who was Udham Singh? Born in Sunam in Punjab’s Sangrur district in 1899. He was a political activist who got associated with the Ghadar Party while in the US.

In 1934, Singh made his way to London with the purpose of assassinating O’Dwyer, who in 1919 had been the Lieutenant Governor of Punjab and unsurprisingly, Singh considered O’Dwyer to be responsible for the massacre.

Instead of Dyer, who instructed his men to open fire at the crowd gathered in Jallianwala Bagh, O’Dwyer is considered to be the actual perpetrator, since Dyer could not have executed it without his permission.

On March 13, 1940 Singh shot O’Dwyer at a meeting of the East India Association and the Royal Central Asian Society at Caxton Hill. He was sentenced to death and was hanged on July 31, 1940 at Pentonville Prison.

What is Ghadar Party?

The multi-ethnic party was believed to have communist tendencies and was founded by Sohan Singh Bhakna in 1913. Headquartered in California. It was committed to the ouster of the British from India.

Malayalam poet Akkitham wins 55th Jnanpith Award

Eminent Malayalam poet Akkitham has been chosen for 55th Jnanpith Award for the year 2019. The announcement in this regard was made by Jnanpith Selection Board chaired by novelist, scholar and Jnanpith laureate Pratibha Ray.

About Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri:

Born in 1926, he was popularly known as Akkitham. He is one of the most revered names in Malayalam poetry. Apart from poetry, his literary excellence has footprints in genre such as drama, critical essays, children literature, short stories, reminiscence and translations.

He is a poet of rare integrity, a creator of many works, all considered as classics. His poetry reflects unfathomable compassion, imprints of Indian philosophical and moral values and a bridge between tradition and modernity.
