Tamil Nadu

State Policy & Industrial Schemes

  • Tamil Nadu Semiconductor Ecosystem Scheme 2026:
    • Launch: Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay officially launched the Tamil Nadu Semiconductor Ecosystem Scheme 2026 at the Secretariat.
    • Objective: Positions Tamil Nadu as a leading national hub for semiconductor manufacturing and advanced electronics design.
    • Two-Tier Support Framework:
      • Category 1: Top-up state financial incentives provided over and above Union Government assistance under the Centre’s Semicon 2.0 / India Semiconductor Mission scheme.
      • Category 2: Direct state incentives and support for key ecosystem projects that do not fall under the Central scheme but are vital to building the local semiconductor supply chain.

Constitutional Law, Judiciary

  • Supreme Court Benchmark Ruling on Conversion & Quota Eligibility:
    • Case: Dismissed a Tamil Nadu government appeal seeking confirmation of a state executive order granting BC quota benefits to converted Muslims.
    • Ruled that a member of a Hindu Backward Class (BC/MBC/SC) who converts to a non-Hindu faith (such as Islam or Christianity) cannot claim affirmative action/reservation benefits under Article 16(4) based on pre-conversion social backwardness.
    • Constitutional Interpretations:
      • Conversion severs the legal foundation of caste-conditioned affirmative action; caste identity cannot be treated as an immutable personal attribute when moving to a religion whose basic theological structure does not recognize caste.
      • Scheduled Caste (SC) status is governed strictly by Article 341 and Paragraph 3 of the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950, which excludes non-Hindu, non-Sikh, and non-Buddhist converts.
