National Events:
a) “Shatabdi Purush”:
*Former Lok Sabha MP Pandit Ramkishan was recently awarded the title of “Shatabdi Purush” (Man of the Century) in New Delhi in recognition of his contributions as a socialist leader. The honor was bestowed on him during the birth centenary celebrations of Madhu Limaye, a renowned socialist ideologue and parliamentarian.
* Ramkishan is considered the most senior and iconic figure in Indian socialism and has been recognized as the “Socialist Shatabdi Purush”. The event was attended by senior politicians including former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechuri, INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala and JDU leader KC Tyagi.
b) BARC:
*Ajit Kumar Mohanty, who is a well-known physicist and also serves as the director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), has been selected as the new chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy.
* This appointment means he will be responsible for overseeing India’s nuclear program and exploring the use of atomic power for non-military purposes. Mohanty will take over from K N Vyas.
c) NPCIL & NTPC:
*India’s push towards clean energy sources took another leap forward on May 1, when the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) signed a supplementary joint venture agreement with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to develop nuclear power projects in the country.
* The two companies will initially focus on developing two pressurised heavy-water reactor (PHWR) projects: the Chutka Madhya Pradesh Atomic Power Project (2×700 MW) and the Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (4×700 MW). These projects were identified as part of fleet mode nuclear projects.
d) AIME-2023:
*Indian Naval Ships Satpura and Delhi on May 1st, 2023, led by RAdm Gurcharan Singh, the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, arrived in Singapore to participate in the inaugural ASEAN India Maritime Exercise (AIME-2023). The exercise is scheduled to take place from May 2nd to May 8th, 2023.
e) ADC-150:
*The Indian Navy and Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) collaborated to conduct the first successful test trial of a locally-made Air Droppable Container called ‘ADC-150’ from the IL 38SD aircraft off the coast of Goa on April 27, 2023.
* With a payload capacity of 150 kg, the purpose of the test was to enhance the naval operational logistics capabilities and provide an immediate response to meet the engineering stores’ requirements of ships under distress, more than 2,000 km away from the coast.
f) Reliance General Insurance:
*Reliance General Insurance has become the first general insurance company to accept RBI’s Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) e-Rupee (e) for premium payments.
* The insurer has tied up with YES Bank to facilitate the collection of premiums in digital mode using the bank’s e-rupee platform. e-rupee is a digital token, equivalent to a banknote, and is a sovereign currency backed by the RBI.
g) Gujarat Day: 1 May
* May 1 comes as the establishment day for the state of Gujarat. It was on this day in the year 1960 that the former state of Bombay was segregated on a linguistic basis and two states were formed Maharashtra and Gujarat.
* Gujarat also played a significant role in the commerce of Mumbai and Karachi during the British Raj.
h)Maharashtra Day: 1 May
* Maharashtra Day or Maharashtra Diwas is celebrated on May 1 every year. The day commemorates the creation of the predominantly Marathi-speaking state of Maharashtra with the enactment of the Bombay Reorganisation Act in 1960.
* The Bombay Reorganisation Act in 1960 bifurcated the Bombay State into two separate states namely, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
i) MOHUA:
*The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MOHUA) has signed an MoU with RITES Limited. It has been for technical assistance for Solid Waste Management & UWM under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0.
* The Technical Support Unit (TSU) of RITES will assist SBM-U for 3 yrs. Under SWM, the areas of engagement will be process standardization and engineering design of waste management facilities.
j) MSME:
*The Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, has launched the scheme, “Vivad se Vishwas I – Relief to MSMEs” for providing relief to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) for COVID-19 period.
* The scheme was announced in the Union Budget 2023-24 by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The scheme was commenced from 17 April and the last date for submission of claims is 30 June.
k) “Best Practices in Social Sector: A Compendium, 2023”:
*NITI Aayog released the “Best Practices in Social Sector: A Compendium, 2023” in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, on 1 May 2023.
* This compendium includes 75 case studies cutting across 14 key social sectors. The case studies have been sourced from all States and Union Territories and 30 Ministries and Departments of the Government of India.
l) Australian High Commission:
*For the first time in the history of Ladakh the Australian High Commission in India has announced its government grant for a project in Kargil.
* This was announced during a Special Meeting at Srinagar chaired by the Australian high commissioner to India, Barry O’Farrell. The project “Return to Roots” aims to integrate traditional knowledge with the current school science curriculum.
m) POEM-2:
*IN-SPACE, a commercial wing of ISRO has informed that PSLV Orbital Experimental Module, POEM-2 has been successfully conducting on-orbit experiments in space.
* POEM-2 with seven payloads is conducting in-orbit testing for various non-government entities. The valuable on-orbit data received offers scope for further development and new opportunities.
n) Indian Institute of Foreign Trade:
*Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, New Delhi celebrated its Diamond Jubilee on its 60th Foundation Day on 2 May 2023. The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade is a leading business school in India.
* Established in 1963, it works as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It also functions as a civil services training institute. Its main campus is in New Delhi.
o) RSF:
*India’s ranking in the 2023 World Press Freedom Index has slipped to 161 out of 180 countries, according to the latest report released by global media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF). In 2022, India was ranked at 150.
* Norway, Ireland and Denmark occupied the top three positions in press freedom, while Vietnam, China and North Korea constituted the bottom three.
Tamil Nadu Events:
a) IIT Madras:
*Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras have developed a machine learning-based computational tool called GBMDriver to improve the detection of cancer-causing tumours in the brain and spinal cord.
* The tool is freely accessible and was primarily developed to identify driver mutations and passenger mutations in glioblastoma, a rapidly proliferating tumour.
International Events:
a) Uzbekistan:
*A vast majority of Uzbekistan’s voters voted “Yes” to President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s bid to rewrite the country’s Constitution in a referendum.
*President Mirziyoyev’s narrative is that the new Constitution gives emphasis on human rights, freedoms, gender equality, economic growth and prosperity. The new charter would also extend the presidential term to seven years, with a two-term limit.
b)International Labour Day: 1 May
* International Labour Day is celebrated on 1 May every year. to commemorate the struggles and sacrifices of labours’ movement. It is also known as May Day.
* The tradition of Labour Day dates back to 19th century America. On May 1st, 1886 workers in Chicago organized a strike to demand an eight-hour workday. The first labour day was celebrated in India on May 1, 1923, in Chennai.
c) Apple and Google:
*Apple and Google, together with Samsung and other companies like Tile, Chipolo, and Pebblebee, have collaborated to combat unwanted tracking through Bluetooth devices that were initially designed to help locate lost items such as keys or luggage.
* These companies have jointly submitted a proposal to create standards for preventing secret surveillance on Apple’s AirTag trackers and similar products.
d) Maria Stepanova:
*Maria Stepanova, a renowned Russian writer currently residing in Berlin, has been awarded the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding in 2023.
* Her novel, In Memory of Memory, which delves into the themes of Stalinism and the collapse of the Soviet Union, earned her a nomination for the Booker Prize in 2021.
* However, it was her volume of poetry, Girls Without Clothes, that earned her the prestigious Leipzig Book Prize. This collection of poetry sensitively explores the often concealed violence against women and the power dynamics that fuel this oppression in a highly poetic manner.
e) World Press Freedom day:
*On May 3, UNESCO marked World Press Freedom Day by awarding its annual World Press Freedom Prize to three imprisoned Iranian female journalists.
* The winners, Niloufar Hamedi, Elaheh Mohammadi, and Narges Mohammadi, were recognized for their work in reporting on human rights abuses in Iran and their commitment to truth and accountability.
f) Vanessa Hudson:
*Vanessa Hudson has been appointed as the new CEO of Qantas Airways Ltd, making her the first woman to hold this position in the airline’s history. The appointment was made on May 2, and she will take over from Alan Joyce, who is retiring in November.
* Hudson has been with Qantas for 28 years and has held various senior positions, including chief customer officer and senior vice president for the Americas and New Zealand.
g) India & Israel:
*India and Israel have signed an MoU on Industrial Research and Development Cooperation with focus on several key technology areas.
* These are aerospace, Electronics Instrumentation, etc. The Multi-Sectoral Agreement was signed between Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, CSIR and Directorate of Defense Research and Development, Ministry of Defense of Israel in New Delhi.
Sports Events:
a) Ding Liren:
*Ding Liren has become 17th world chess champion – the first from China – defeating Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi in a tie-breaker. Ding defeated Nepo in the last of the four Rapid tiebreaks.
* Ding takes over as winner of the World Chess Championship from Norway’s Magnus Carlsen, who chose not to defend his title after a 10-year reign. He and Nepomniachtchi had finished on seven points each after the 14 first-stage games played in the Kazakh capital, Astana.
b) Luca Brecel:
*Luca Brecel, the 28-year-old Belgian snooker player, has claimed his first world title after defeating Mark Selby in a thrilling final at the Crucible in Sheffield.
* The match went down to the wire, with Selby putting up a strong fightback to push Brecel to the brink. However, Brecel held his nerve and eventually prevailed with an 18-15 victory.
c) Cristiano Ronaldo:
*Cristiano Ronaldo has become the world’s highest-paid athlete. Ronaldo’s annual playing salary went up to an estimated $75 mn.
* Messi is next on the list after bringing home a combined $130 mn while club team mate and France captain Mbappe is at 3rd. Los Angeles Lakers player and NBA great LeBron James ($119.5 mn) and Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez ($110 mn) rounded out the top five.
