National Events:

BSF:

  • The Border Security Force (BSF) has started a weeklong exercise “Ops Alert” all along the Indo-Pak international border from Sir Creek to Rann of Kutch in Gujarat and Barmer district of Rajasthan in order to tighten security ahead of the Republic Day.
  • India will celebrate its 74th Republic Day on January 26, 2023. The exercise began on 21 January and will end on 27 January 2023.

 

AMPHEX 2023:

  • The Indian Navy carried out a six-day-long mega military exercise along with the Army and the IAF near Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh. The largest biennial tri-services amphibious exercise AMPHEX 2023 was conducted from 17 to 22 January 2023.
  • The exercise was conducted to review the preparedness of the Indian Navy and the Army during the war, national calamities and coastal security enforcement.

 

 ‘PRALAY’:

  • IAF is going to conduct exercise ‘PRALAY’ in Northeast India from 1-5 February 2023. The exercise will include a variety of platforms, such as C-130J ‘Super Hercules’ aircraft, Chinook heavy-lift and Apache attack helicopters.
  • The exercise will be conducted in preparation for another Air Force exercise named ‘Eastern Akash’, an annual command-level exercise, to be held in first week of February.

 

Aska police station:

  • Aska police station in Ganjam district of Odisha was awarded number one police station. The award was given during DGSP/IGSP conference held on 20 Jan’23, in New Delhi. Aska station got this title in the annual ranking of police stations for year 2022.
  • Gangapur police station in Odisha’s Ganjam was awarded 2nd best. Banbasa station of Uttarakhand’s Champawat got 3rd place.

 

International Trade Fair of Millets and Organics Products:

  • The 4th International Trade Fair of Millets and Organics Products began on 20 January 2023 in Bengaluru. The 3-day fair was organized by Department of Agriculture and Government of Karnataka.
  • It was a platform for farmers and other stakeholders to explore opportunities in agriculture and its allied sectors. India is leading among countries to celebrate 2023 as the International Year of Millets.

 

Subhas Chandra Bose:

  • 23 January 2023 will be celebrated as the 126th birth anniversary of India’s freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose. He was born on January 23, 1897, at Cuttack in Odisha and his birthday is being celebrated as ‘Parakram Divas’ (day of valor) since 2022.
  • In 1923, he was elected the President of the All India Youth Congress and was elected President of the Haripura Congress Session in 1938.

 

CGHS:

  • In a bid to provide more hospital options for patients, the government is considering allowing Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) beneficiaries to avail treatment at hospitals empaneled with the flagship Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojna (AB-PMJAY).
  • The National Health Authority (NHA) is in the process of integrating the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) with Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).

 

Himachal Pradesh government:

  • The Himachal Pradesh government intends to make the state as the first Green Energy State by the end of 2025 by harnessing hydro, hydrogen and solar energy and switching to green products.
  • The State is projected as a Power State in the Country and under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the state government is resolute to promote, develop and harness optimally, the huge energy potential of the State.

 

UNESCO:

  • Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Centre has nominated the maidams of Ahom Kingdom in Charaideo to seek a UNESCO World Heritage Site tag.
  • The historic maidams of Ahom Kingdom in Charaideo were chosen out of 52 sites for the UNESCO World Heritage Site tag.

 

 ‘School of Eminence’:

  • Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann launched the ‘School of Eminence’, an ambitious project of the Punjab government.
  • CM Bhagwant Mann noted that it is a revolutionary step towards ensuring a bright future for students. The Punjab government fixed a budget of Rs 200 crore for the ‘School of Eminence’ project.

 

Kerala‘s Wayanad:

  • Kerala‘s Wayanad becomes the first district in the country to provide basic documents and facilities such as Aadhaar cards, ration cards, birth/death certificates, election ID cards, bank accounts and health insurance to all tribespeople.
  • Apart from the basic documents, other services such as income certificates, ownership certificates, age certificates, and applications for new pensions are also provided at the camps.

 

MahaMetro:

  • The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro) has announced that the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) will inspect a stretch of the Pune Metro in February, and clearances are expected in March.
  • This line features India’s deepest underground station, which will be ready in a few months at the Civil Court and measures 33.1 metres (108.59 feet) in depth.

 

International Events:

Chris Hipkins:

  • New Zealand’s former COVID-19 response minister Chris Hipkins will replace Jacinda Ardern as Prime Minister. Ardern has announced her resignation from the post of PM after completing 3 years in her second term.
  • Hipkins will take over as the country’s 41st prime minister. Besides holding the education portfolio, Hipkins is also minister for police and public service, and leader of the House.

 

Medical emergency:

  • Medical emergency was declared following reports of children dying of malnutrition and other diseases caused by illegal gold mining.
  • Purpose of declaration is to restore health services for Yanomami people. Government had also announced food packages. Yanomami territory is Brazil’s largest indigenous reservation bordering Venezuela.

 

UNESCO:

  • Charaideo Moidams is India’s nomination for UNESCO’s world heritage site status in the cultural category. Site of Moidams-the Mound-Burial System of the Ahom Dynasty in Charaideo district of Assam is the nomination to UNESCO.
  • Moidams (or Maidams) represents the late medieval (13th-19th century CE) mound burial tradition of the Tai Ahoms in Assam, which lasted almost 600 years.

 

Anik Dutta:

  • Anik Dutta directed film Aparajito (The Undefeated) got the best scriptwriting award. Ketaki Narayan was declared the best actress for her role in Krishnendu Kalesh directed film Prappeda (Hawk’s Muffin).
  • The awards were given during Asian Film Competition section at the 21st Dhaka International Film Festival (DIFF) held in Bangladesh. Ikkei Watanabe from Japan got the best actor award.

 

Cyclone- I:

  • The first joint exercise between the special forces of the Indian and the Egyptian Army, ‘Exercise Cyclone – I‘ started on 14 January at Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, said the Ministry of Defence.
  • The exercise aims to bolster defence co-operation between the two countries and focus on sharing professional skills and interoperability of special forces in desert terrain while undertaking counter terrorism, reconnaissance, raids and other special operations.

Justice AK Sikri:

  • Justice AK Sikri appointed Administrator of Shooting World Cup 2023. Retired Supreme Court Judge, A.K.Sikri has been appointed by the Delhi High Court as Administrator to manage the use of funds for the ISSF Shooting World Cup in 2023.
  • The world cup will take place in March 2023 in Bhopal. According to the court, the administrator can enlist the services of any athlete of his choosing who has competed at the national or international level in shooting.
