National Events:

Winter session:

  • The winter session of the Uttar Pradesh Legislature commenced on 5 December 2022. The government tabled the supplementary budget amounting to over Rs.33,700 crore for the financial year 2022-23.
  • This includes a Revenue Account of Rs 13,75,684.28 lakh and capital account of Rs 20,01,270.39 lakh. The discussion on the budget will be taken up on 7 December 2022.

 

Total coal production:

  • India’s total coal production has increased by 11.66 per cent to 75.87 Million Ton (MT) from 67.94 MT during November 2022 as compared to November 2021.
  • 24 mines out of the top 37 mines in coal production have produced more than 100 per cent and production of five mines stood between 80 and 100 percent.
  • During the period, Coal based power generation has also registered a growth of 16.28 %.

 

Parakram Diwas:

  • To mark the 51st anniversary of India’s victory in the Longewala battle during the 1971 war, Parakram Diwas was celebrated at Longewala War Memorial in Rajasthan on December 5, 2022.
  • Several programs will be organized on this occasion at the Sagat Singh Stadium. The Longewala battle between India and Pakistan in 1971 was one of the biggest and most decisive battles.

 

World Bank:

  • The World Bank has informed that the Indian economy is set to grow at 6.9 per cent in 2022-23, raising its forecast of 6.5 per cent growth made in October 2022.
  • It however saw the government meeting the fiscal deficit target of 6.4 per cent of the GDP in 2022-23. World Bank expects the inflation at 7.1 per cent in current fiscal year.

 

President’s Standard and Colour and Indian Navy Crest:

  • President of India has approved introduction of a new design for the President’s Standard and Colour and Indian Navy Crest for the Indian Navy. These were unveiled at Visakhapatnam on Navy Day on 4 Dec 2022.
  • The erstwhile design of the President’s Standard and Colour for the Indian Navy was instituted on 6 Sep 2017. The Crest has been amended to replace the foul anchor with a Clear Anchor.

 

Forbes ‘ philanthropy list:

  • Gautam Adani emerged as one of the three Indian billionaires being featured in Forbes ‘ philanthropy list for 2022.
  • Shiv Nadar, and Ashok Soota, as well as Malaysian-Indian businessman Brahmal Vasudevan and his lawyer wife Shanthi Kandiah, joined Adani in the 16th edition of the list.
  • Adani’s Rs 60,000 crore pledge makes him one of India’s most generous philanthropists.

 

Bamboo sector:

  • Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar has approved the formation of an Advisory Group for streamlining the development of the Bamboo sector.
  • The Advisory Group has a representation of various stakeholders including academicians, researchers, innovators, etc.
  • The restructured National Bamboo Mission was launched during 2018-19 as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme.

 

World Ayurveda Congress:

  • PM Modi will dedicate three national Ayush institutes to the nation on 10 December 2022 at the 9th World Ayurveda Congress in Goa.
  • The three institutes include, All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIA) in Goa, National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM) in Ghaziabad and National Institute of Homoeopathy (NIH) in Delhi. They will further strengthen the research and facilitate affordable Ayush services.

 

‘Technotex 2023’:

  • India’s premier show on Technical Textiles – ‘Technotex 2023’ will be held in Mumbai from 22nd to 24th February 2023. It is the largest event in the technical textile industry in India.
  • It is focused on providing its attendees access and networking opportunities to meet top CEOs, manufacturers, industry peers, purchase managers, and suppliers from India and around the globe.

 

‘Banker’s Bank of the Year Award 2022’:

  • Canara Bank won the ‘Banker’s Bank of the Year Award 2022’ for India segment at the Global Banking Summit held London in December 2022.
  • Bank Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer LV Prabhakar received the award from the organisers.
  • The Banker’s magazine is a premier global banking and finance resource for more than 180 countries across the world.

 

Noise & Virat Kohli:

  • India’s consumer tech brand, Noise appointed Virat Kohli as its new brand ambassador on 4 December 2022. Gaurav Khatri is a co-founder of Noise.
  • Noise and Virat Kohli- both are leaders in the smart connected lifestyle industry and the cricket world respectively.
  • According to International Data Corporation, in 2021, India-based vendors captured over 65 % of shipments in the TWS category.

 

Mahaparinirvan Divas:

  • India observes 6 December as Mahaparinirvan Divas to mark the death anniversary of Dr. BR Ambedkar.
  • On 6 Dec 1956, he passed away. The day is observed to commemorate his contribution to society.
  • BR Ambedkar, the father of the Indian Constitution, was born on April 14, 1891. He was also among the 7 members of the drafting committee who prepared a draft of the Constitution of independent India.

 

Conference on Soil Health Management for Sustainable Farming:

  • Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar inaugurated Conference on Soil Health Management for Sustainable Farming on 5 December 2022.
  • In two phases, more than 22 crore Soil Health Cards have been distributed to farmers across the country.
  • So far, 499 permanent Soil Testing Laboratories and 2395 Village-level Soil Testing Laboratories have been established in the Country.

 

Hampi Kannada University’s Nadoja Award:

  • Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, Bengaluru, director Dr C N Manjunath, and writers Krishnappa G and S Shadakshari have been chosen for Hampi Kannada University’s Nadoja Award.
  • Dr Manjunath’s contributions in the medical field and social services, Krishnappa’s to literature and Shadakshari’s in the field of literature and social services have been considered.

 

Tamil Nadu Events:

Chennai International Film Festival:

  • The 20th Chennai International Film Festival will begin on December 15 in Chennai. More than 100 films from 51 countries will be screened at the festival, which will be held till December 22.
  • Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation and PVR jointly organize this festival. More than 100 films from many countries including Argentina, Belgium, Australia, USA, Hungary and Pakistan are being screened.

 

International Events:

India – Central Asia meeting:

  • The first India – Central Asia meeting of the National Security Advisers was held in New Delhi on December 2022. National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval addresses the meeting.
  • This is the first time India is hosting a conclave of top security officials from Central Asian countries including Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

 

India & Germany:

  • A meeting was held between External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar and Federal Foreign Affairs Minister of Germany Annalena Baerbock in New Delhi on 5 December 2022.
  • Both sides have signed a Migration and Mobility Agreement which will facilitate easier access for people to study, research and work in both countries.
  • Both sides discussed issues related to climate change, conflict in Ukraine, etc.

 

Global aviation safety ranking:

  • India ranked 48th position in the global aviation safety ranking released by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) on 5 December 2022.
  • India’s score in terms of effective implementation of key safety elements has improved to 85.49%, putting it ahead of China (49), Israel (50), and Turkey (54). Four years ago, India was in the 102nd position. Singapore has topped the chart.

 

European Union-India Competition Week:

  • The European Union-India Competition Week, the 5th edition, was inaugurated in New Delhi on 5 December 2022. The Competition Week is scheduled to be held during 5-7 December 2022.
  • This technical cooperation program has provided a platform for dialogue and exchange of good practices between competition authority officials and experts from the EU and India. CCI Headquarters: New Delhi.

 

“Migration and Development Brief”:

  • As per the World Bank report “Migration and Development Brief”, India is set to receive $ 100 billion as remittances in 2022.
  • In 2021 India received $ 89.4 billion in remittances. India is the 1st country in the world to receive $ 100 billion in remittances from migrant workers abroad.
  • With a share of 23 % of total remittances, the US surpassed the UAE as the top source country in 2020-21.
