Arunachal declared open defecation-free State

Arunachal Pradesh has emerged as the second State in the Northeast, after Sikkim, to be declared Open Defecation Free.

Arunachal has 21 districts and the State attained the feat much before the national deadline of October 2, 2019.

About SBM:

Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) aims to eliminate open defecation by 2019.

The goal also includes conversion of insanitary toilets to pour flush toilets, eradicating of manual scavenging and Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM).

Significance of the mission:

Poor sanitation spreads infectious diseases that kill hundreds of thousands of children each year, and stunt the physical and cognitive development of those who survive.

Announcing a goal of accelerating the reduction in open defecation was a great idea, articulating a worthy goal for serious public policy efforts.

New night frog species

Scientists have discovered a new frog species from Kozhikode’s Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary.

The frog species, named Mewa Singh’s Night frog, belongs to a genus endemic to the Western Ghats.

The frog has been named after wildlife scientist Mewa Singh, in honour of his contributions to behavioural ecology and primate studies.

Significance of this discovery:

Frogs in the genus Nyctibatrachus, commonly known as night frogs, are found only in the Western Ghats mountain range. The addition of the Mewa Singh’s night frog to this group brings the total number of night frogs to 36.

Two new Ginger species found in the northeast

Scientists have discovered two new species of Ginger in easternmost districts, Ukhrul in Manipur and Tuensang in Nagaland, both bordering Myanmar.

Both the plants are from the family of Zingiberaceae, to which the commonly found Ginger (Zingiber officinale) belongs.

Israel Withdraws from UNESCO

Israel has filed notice to withdraw from the UNESCO alongside the United States.

Israel has blasted UNESCO in recent years over the organisation’s criticism of Israel’s occupation of East Jerusalem and its decision to grant full membership to Palestine in 2011.

Israel was the member of UNESCO since 1949. Both Israel and the US have filed its own withdrawal notice in October 2017.

New Guinness World Record from TN – 105-hour non-stop yoga

Kavitha Bharanidaran, from Chenna, has attempted a new Guinness World Record for performing yoga continuously for over 105 hours.

Kavitha Bharanidaran, who took five-minute breaks after each hour, started doing Yoga continuously from 7 AM on December 23, 2017. The 31-year-old, whose husband is her yoga teacher, broke the previous record of 103 hours of non-stop Yoga.

Viswanathan Anand won bronze – World Blitz Chess Championship

Indian chess champion Viswanathan Anand won a bronze medal at the World Blitz Chess Championship in Riyadh.

World Champion Magnus Carlsen won the gold medal, while Russian grandmaster Sergey Karjakin finished won the silver medal.

Rural girl wins gold in world yoga meet

It was held in the United Arab Emirates on Dec. 29, 30

Yoga student C. Kamatchi, the medal winner in the Asian yoga sports championship, has created a record of sort, winning gold in the ‘2017 World yoga sports ranking championship’ held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on December 29 and 30.

About her:

Kamatchi, who hailed from Mudukulathur in the district and studying M. Sc (yoga) at the Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University won the gold, scoring more than 80 out of 100 marks.

The Todas’ most important festival of the year, known as Modhweth, was celebrated at the Muthanadu Mund, in the Nilgiris on December 31, 2017.
