Republic Day 2017
India is celebrating its 68th Republic Day this year. Republic day in India is celebrated every year on 26th of January to honour the Constitution of India as it came into force on the same day in the year 1950.
The chief guest on Republic Day of India 2017 will be Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Why January 26th?
The Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution on January 26, 1950, a date specially chosen to coincide with the anniversary of ‘Purna Swaraj Diwas’. January 26, 1930 was marked as ‘Purna Swaraj Diwas’.

Jeevan Raksha Padak Awards – 2016
The President of India has approved the presenting a gift of Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Awards for the year 2016.
Jeevan Raksha Padak series of awards are given to a person for meritorious act of humane nature in saving the life of a person.
Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak and Jeevan Raksha Padak are the three categories of the award is given.

Padma Awards 2017
The government has announced the list for the Padma Awards 2017. The list comprises 7 Padma Vibhushan, 7 Padma Bhushan and 75 Padma Shri awardees.
Padma Awards are one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.
Awardees from Tamil Nadu:
Sadhguru Jaggi vasudev awarded the Padma vibhushan, which is the second highest honour award in this country for his contribution in the field of spiritualism under the “other category”.
Late Cho Ramaswamy awarded the Padma bhushan for his contribution in the field of Literature and Education Journalism.
T K Murthy is chosen for the Padma shri award for his contribution in the field of Art and Carnatic Music.
Michel Danino awarded the Padma shri for his contribution in the field of Literature and Education.
Nivedita Ragunath Bhide awarded the Padma shri for her contribution in social works.
Mariappan Thangavelu awarded the Padma shri for his contribution in the field of sports and athletics.
Late Sunithi Solomon awarded the Padma shri for her contribution in the field of medicine.

National Voter’s Day
The Election Commission of India celebrated 7th National Voters’ Day (NVD) across the country on 25th January.
Theme: “Empowering Young and Future Voters.”
On this day in 1950, the Election Commission of India was founded. The ECI observes National Voters Day to create awareness on voting and voter rights.
